Storage what it adds and prevents

Storage — what it adds, and the larger costs it routinely prevents.

Storage is the factor people treat as an unwelcome extra and then find has saved them money. Both things can be true, and which one applies depends entirely on what it is preventing.

How containerised storage works

The crew that packs your place loads the containers. Everything is wrapped as if for transit, listed on an inventory you keep a copy of, and sealed in. Containers are racked indoors rather than left in a yard, and when you are ready the same inventory comes back out and is delivered room by room.

  • One handling at each end rather than a shuffle between units
  • A written inventory, with valuable pieces listed individually
  • Furniture wrapped before it goes in, not after it has been scuffed
  • Collection and redelivery quoted as part of the move

Containerised against self-storage

These get compared as if they were the same product and they are not. A self-storage unit is a room you rent: cheaper as a line, with all the lifting, the van hire and the two handlings on you. Containerised storage is a service with those built in. Compare the total effort and the total cost, not the headline of one against the total of the other.

What storage usually prevents

A rushed completion

The commonest case. Storage buys the days between one place ending and the next beginning, which is otherwise bought with stress.

A second move

Moving into temporary accommodation with a full household means paying to move twice. Storing the bulk and taking a suitcase means paying to move once.

Damage during building work

Two or three rooms in store while a floor comes up costs far less than repairing what the dust and traffic would have done.

A long-distance double handling

On a cross-country move where the far end is not ready, storing near the destination beats returning a loaded vehicle.

Getting it quoted

Tell us roughly what is going in, whether you will need access, and when you expect to want it back. It is quoted alongside the move rather than after it — and storage arranged in advance is part of a plan, while storage arranged on the morning is an emergency.

Worth knowing

Storage questions

Does storage make a move more expensive?

It adds a handling and a period of keeping, so yes in isolation. In practice it frequently prevents a larger cost: a rushed completion, a second move, or paying to hold a property you have already left.

Containerised or self-storage — which is cheaper?

They are different products. Self-storage is a room you rent and fill yourself, with all the lifting on you. Containerised is a service: we pack it, list it, store it and bring it back. Compare the total effort, not just the monthly figure.

Can I get at things while stored?

With notice, during working hours — a container is brought down and opened. Plan for a day or so's warning rather than turning up. That is the trade for one handling and an indoor rack.

How long do people usually store for?

It varies enormously, which is why we do not publish a scale. Some need it for the gap between completions, some for the length of a refurbishment. Tell us roughly and it is quoted alongside the move.

Is stored property covered?

Yes, with the usual conditions around owner-packed cartons and items of unusual value. Declare anything genuinely valuable before it goes in.

Next step

Might need somewhere for it to go?

Raise it at quote stage even if you are unsure. Storage arranged in advance is part of a plan; storage arranged on the morning is an emergency.
