Questions

What people ask, answered plainly

The questions we are actually asked about cost, answered plainly and without figures. If yours is not here, send it with your enquiry.

01

Why are there no prices on a site called removalscost.com?

Because a figure given before anyone has looked at your move is a guess with a pound sign on it. Every removals price depends on the volume, the access, the packing and the distance, and none of those are knowable from a bedroom count. What we publish instead is an honest explanation of what moves the number, and then we survey your move and put a real figure in writing.

02

What actually affects the cost of a removal?

Seven things, in roughly this order of impact: how much there is, how far it goes, the access at both ends, how much packing you want done, whether anything needs storing, when you move, and the extras. Each one is explained in plain words on our page about what affects the cost.

03

Is the survey free?

Yes, and there is no obligation attached to it. Most moves are surveyed by video — you walk round on your phone and we see the volume, the doorways, the stairs and the access. For larger homes or awkward buildings we come out.

04

Can I get a rough idea before committing to a survey?

You can get a clear idea of what will drive your cost, which is more useful than a number that was never going to apply to you. Read the seven factors, work out which ones are true of your move, and you will know whether yours sits at the simple end or the complicated one.

05

Do you cover the whole UK?

Yes. We are not a local firm with a nationwide page — we work across the country, collecting and delivering in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol and everywhere between. There is no branch on your high street and we are not going to invent one.

06

How do I compare two removals quotes fairly?

Check that both assume the same volume, the same packing depth and the same access. Most of the gap between two quotes lives in one of those three, not in the firm's margin. A quote that does not state the volume it measured is not really a quote.

07

Why did another firm quote so much less?

Usually one of three reasons: they measured a smaller volume, they assumed you are doing the packing, or they have not allowed for the stairs, the parking or the loft. Occasionally they have simply quoted low to win the booking and intend to have a different conversation on the day. Ask all three questions and the gap normally explains itself.

08

Does the time of year change the cost?

It changes availability more than anything. Summer, Fridays and month-ends are when everyone moves, so those dates go first and there is less room to accommodate a change. Mid-week and mid-month is easier to book. What we will not do is charge more because a date sounds urgent.

09

Is a bigger property always more expensive?

Not reliably. A large house with a driveway and wide doors can be quicker than a small flat on the fourth floor of a building with no lift and nowhere to park. Volume matters, but the route the volume has to travel matters just as much.

10

Does packing myself save money?

It can, and it is the line most people can genuinely move. It also takes far longer than anyone expects and badly packed cartons are the commonest cause of breakages. The usual compromise is that you do the books, clothes and non-fragile cupboards and we do the kitchen, the glass and the pictures.

11

What is not included in a standard quote?

Anything we have told you is not included, which is the point of writing it down. Typically that is packing you have chosen to do yourself, materials beyond the protection we bring, storage, specialist handling for pianos or safes, and any parking suspension a council charges for. All of it is listed before you book.

12

Do you charge for parking permits or suspensions?

Where a council charges for a bay suspension, that cost is theirs and it is passed on at cost with the paperwork. We will tell you at survey whether your address needs one and who has to apply.

13

Is there a deposit?

Booking terms, including any deposit and the cancellation window, are set out in the booking contract and summarised on our terms page. You see them before you commit, not after.

14

Are my things insured?

Goods in transit and storage cover are in place, with the usual conditions around owner-packed cartons and items of unusual value. Declare anything genuinely valuable at survey and we will confirm in writing what applies.

15

What if my completion slips?

The load stays on the vehicle or goes into store overnight rather than onto a pavement. We tell you plainly what that means for the booking. It is the single commonest thing to go wrong on a moving day and it is worth asking any firm how they handle it.

16

Do you do small moves as well as whole houses?

Both. A single room, a studio, one heavy item, or a five-bedroom house with a loft and a garage. For genuinely small loads we will point you at man and van rather than quoting a full removal you do not need.

17

Do you do office and business moves?

Yes — offices, practices, studios and small units, usually out of hours so trading stops for the least possible time. The cost drivers are different from a house move: the desk count, the IT, and how much of it has to happen in one night.

18

How far ahead should I book?

As soon as you have a date, even a provisional one. Booking early does not change the price but it does change what is available, and a date you cannot get is expensive in its own way.

19

Who handles the customs paperwork on a European move?

We do, built from the survey inventory. Since the UK left the EU a household move needs a proper packing list and the destination country's transfer-of-residence process, and each of the four we cover differs.

Still not answered?

Put it in the notes on the quote form. Services covers what we do, coverage covers where, and European removals covers moves that leave the country.

Find out what your move actually involves

Tell us about it and we will survey it properly, then send a clear written quote that lists what is included and what would change it. No figure before we have looked — that would just be a guess with a pound sign on it.
