Man and van and where it stops being cheaper

The small end — and an honest account of where it stops being the cheaper option.

Man and van is the cheapest way to move a small load and the most expensive way to move a medium one. Knowing which you have is the whole point of this page.

What it suits

  • Single rooms and shared-house moves
  • Studios and lightly filled one-beds
  • Student moves to fixed handover times
  • Auction, dealer, shop and marketplace collections
  • One awkward item: a sofa, a fridge-freezer, an upright piano, a workbench
  • Clearing a storage unit into a new address

Where the line is

Roughly a well-filled one-bed. Below it, a van and two people is genuinely the efficient answer. Above it, the job becomes two trips and a long day — more hours, more driving, more handling — and a properly sized removal would have been both quicker and cheaper.

Describe the load honestly and we will say which it is. We would rather point you at the smaller service and be right than sell you the larger one and be wrong.

What pushes a small move up

Travel

On a small load, the driving is a far larger share of the total than on a house move. A long trip either side of a short job is still a long trip, and we show it as distance rather than folding it somewhere less visible.

Stairs

A fourth-floor carry can take longer than the journey. It is the commonest reason a small move runs past its estimate, and it is entirely predictable if you tell us the floor.

Collections

Things bought secondhand are reliably heavier, more fragile and less packed than they photograph, and frequently have to leave within a narrow window. What we need is what it actually is, roughly what it weighs, and when it has to be gone by.

Helping on the day

Plenty of people carry alongside the crew and it does reduce the hours. Say so when you book so the crew is sized for it — a job priced for two that needs three is not a saving.

Worth asking

Small-move questions

Is man and van always cheaper?

Up to a point, then no. Around a well-filled one-bed it becomes two trips and a long day, which costs more than a properly sized removal would have. We will tell you which side of that line you are on.

One person or two?

Two, on anything with furniture in it. One and a van is fine for cartons. Paying for one person and then needing two mid-job is the most expensive way to run a small move.

What makes a small move cost more than expected?

Travel and stairs, almost always. On a small load the driving is a much larger share of the total than on a house move, and a fourth-floor carry can take longer than the journey.

Can I help carry to save money?

You can, and plenty of people do. Say so when you book so the crew size is priced for it rather than assumed — a job costed for two people that turns into three is not a saving.

Do collections cost more?

They can, because the item is usually heavier than described and the loading window is usually narrower than expected. Tell us what it actually is and when it has to be gone by.
